Heshan - only swimmer to win a medal in Malaysia

Heshan Unamboowe of Trinity College became the only swimmer to win a medal-a 'bronze' for Sri Lanka at the Asian Schools Swimming Championship conducted by the Asian Schools Swimming Federation held in Malaysia from July 17 to 22.

Heshan who was not even conducted for the trials to pick swimmer for the Bejing Olympic Games, won the bronze in the 200 metres medley event, returning a time of 2,15.95 secs.

He established a new Sri Lanka record in this event, erasing off the previous time of 2.17.95 secs set by Andrew Abeysinghe in 2005.

Sixteen swimmers 8 boys and 8 girls participated in the championships from Sri Lanka and the other swimmer to perform somewhat well was Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway International School, Kandy who entered the final of 50 meters butterfly stroke and was placed fourth.
