Cheaper Rangoon kekulu soon
Irangika Range
The Government has decided to release a kilo of Rangoon kekulu rice
imported from Myanmar at a concessionary rate of Rs.50 to the private
sector to provide relief to consumers.
Addressing a press-briefing held yesterday in Colombo, Trade,
Marketing Development and Co-operatives and Consumer Services Minister
Bandula Gunawardhana said that the Rangoon Kekulu rice will be released
as a quantity of 50kg through the Food Commissioner’s Department in
Narahenpita.
“Now we release Rangoon Kekulu at a concessionary rate of Rs.59 to
consumers through Co-operatives, Sathosa branches and Welfare Societies
of the State organizations.”
This opportunity would vastly benefit to the traders in the private
sector to sell Rangoon kekulu to consumers by keeping small profit
margin. The Minister said that the country was not badly affected to the
rice shortage under the world food crisis due to bumper harvest of Yala
season and maintaining a buffer rice stock.
