Bens cagers take under 17 title

St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena emerged champions at the Colombo North Zonal Boys Under 17 Basketball Tournament played at their own courts, recently.

They defeated St. Joseph’s College, Colombo by 65 points to 59 in the final. The home built a narrow 25 points to 23 lead at half time.

Kanishka Perera and Udayanga Perera scored 14 points each while Sanjaya Gamlath notched seven points.

For St. Joseph’s Praneeth Udumalagala chipped in with a massive 31 points while he was ably helped by Hinath Silva with nine points.

In the consolation final Colombo International School overwhelmed De La Salle College, Modera 65 points to 32 after taking a good 36 points to 13 lead at breather.

Sivadarshan Selvaraj (18) and Prashantha Hemachandra and Virosh Dharmadasa nine points apiece were the top scorers for the winners.

Rushin (9) and Priyasad Mayura (8) stood out for the losers.

In the semi finals host St. Benedict’s College beat Colombo International School by 80 points to 76 after leading 38 points to 26 at the short whistle.

St. Joseph’s College beat De La Salle College by 59 points to 20 after being well ahead with 39 points to seven at breather in the other semi final fixture.

D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo International School, St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, St. Benedict’s College, De La Salle College, Modera and Nalanda College were the teams took part in this four days competition.

Fourteen teams for Colombo South Tourney

Fourteen teams will be in action at the Colombo South Boys Basketball Tournament organised by the St. Peter’s College and conducted by the Schools Basketball Association of Sri Lanka which will be worked off from July 14 to 20 at three different venues St. Peter’s College, Colombo, S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa.

The tournament will be conducted in four divisions. Group A- St. Peter’s College, Lyceum International school, Mahanama College, Amal International School.

Group B- Maharagama Central College, S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Royal College.

Group C- Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa, Alethea International School, Asian International School.

Group D- St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, St. Joseph’s College, Nugegoda, Colombo South International, Isipathana College.

Meanwhile, the Kandy (Boys) and Kurunegala (Girls) Zonal Basketball Tournaments will be played from July 11 to 13 conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association.

The Kandy event organised by the Trinity College will take place in their own courts with seven teams having confirmed their participation so far.

The Kurunegala tournament for girls organised by the Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala will see six teams taking part. The matches will be played at HFC, Kurunegala.
