KOTTE: Puttlam District MP Priyakara Jayaratne was yesterday
unanimously elected as Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Priyankara Jayaratne’s name was proposed by Prime Minister Ratnasiri
Wickramanayaka for the position of Deputy Speaker while Leader of the
House Nimal Siripala de Silva seconded it. Later Speaker W. J. M.
Lokubandara announced that MP Priyankara Jayaratne was elected as the
Deputy Speaker.
The new Deputy Speaker thanked the House for electing him unanimously
despite political differences in the traditions of democracy.
The Speaker wishing his newly elected Deputy said he would no doubt
hold the scales even in the performance of his new task and securing
privileges of members of the House while respecting the Parliamentary
tradition.
Jayaratne was elected as the Deputy Speaker in place of Geethanjana
Gunawardena who resigned from the post. |
