Private bus operators say ‘no’ to strike
Rajmi Manatunga
The Lanka Private Bus Operators Association (LPBOA) yesterday said
they will not participate in tomorrow’s islandwide token strike called
by certain trade unions.
Addressing a media briefing, LPBOA Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said the
Association has taken no decision to participate in the trade union
action of which they were informed only last Friday.
We would have participated in the strike if the trade unions
concerned discussed the matter with us beforehand prior to making a
decision. Since that did not take place, the Association did not decide
to take part in the strike planned for Thursday, he said.
However, Wijeratne said despite the LPBOA’s abstention, private bus
owners are at liberty to make a decision of their choice regarding the
purported trade union action.
“We learn that a further fuel price hike is likely after the
Sabaragamuwa and North central provincial council polls. If such a hike
is effected without a subsidy to bus operators, we will definitely
strike from the following day itself,” he added.
