ANURADHAPURA: Reports of malpractices and corruption in the
Ministries headed by JVPers will be released soon, North Central Chief
Ministerial Candidate Berty Premalal Dissanayake said.
“The JVP has proved that they are clever only in rhetoric. In the
past the JVP was offered key ministerial portfolios such as,
Agriculture, Irrigation, Fisheries, Culture and Industries, which ended
as utter failures,” he said.
“The restoration of 10,000 tanks was confined only to name boards.
The JVP dissolved farmer organisations, substituting them with tank
organisations instead, under their relatives and henchmen. Without bank
drafts, advances were paid and without retentions, whole estimated sums
were settled to the contractors, deviating from the rules and
regulations,” Dissanayake said.
He was addressing a press conference at the Anuradhapura Petroleum
Corporation’s circuit bungalow on Sunday.
He said there is no future for the United National Party.
“It is heading for virtual downfall. Though they have despatched a
retired Army General to fight against me for the Chief Ministerial post
he would not succeed. The UNP Chief Ministerial candidate has no base in
the province. Janaka Perera is only a war hero and nothing more. There
are number of retired Army Generals in the country.
In the circumstances neither be nor the opposition leader is fit to
be the Chief Minister. We have fielded the ‘buddy’ of late General
Kobbekaduwa, Upali to the forthcoming provincial council elections,
Dissanayake said.
He said the SLFP Alliance need not engage in malpractices, or resort
to violence to get votes since the people were prepared to usher the
SLFP alliance into power resulting from the vast development achieved in
the province.
“The North Central Provincial Council has succeeded in changing the
traditional life style of the people in the province by empowering their
livelihood.
As an example during the last Maha Season, farmers cultivated maize
in 60,000 acres to collect a harvest of 120,000 metric tons.
They have earned an income of Rs. 3,600 million. In the once
threatened villages from Wilpattu to Polonnaruwa, people enjoy freedom,
and all basic living amenities and living without fear as the areas have
been liberated from LTTE by war heroes,” Dissanayake said.
