Batti. students, teachers on familiarisation tour to Colombo
Sixty Tamil speaking students and their teachers from two schools in
Batticaloa were hosted recently by US Ambassador Robert O’Blake and
American Centre Library as part of a programme sponsored by the Sri
Lanka Army to bring underprivileged children of the conflict affected
Eastern areas to Colombo to experience the diversity and the
educational, cultural and international opportunities available to all
Sri Lankans.
During their visit to the American Centre the students enjoyed
meeting Ambassador Robert Blake, an introduction to America, the
internet and library services and short film screenings.
American Centre Staff collected donations to provide a gift of
reading books, maps and other learning materials to each school as well
as writing books, pencils and other school goods to each child.
Donations from American NGO “Room to Read”, Sadeepa Publishers, and
the Sri Lanka National Library included over 15 trilingual reading books
for each child, as well as a large supply of books for each school’s
library.
