countries in the world including the USA, UK, Nepal, India and this
function which was held in Tangalle to coincide with those celebrations
was organised by the Youth Business Programme of the Hambantota District
Chamber of Commerce (HDCC) in collaboration with the Women Development
Foundation (WDF).
At the International Widows Day celebration held in Tangalle, awards
were presented to five widows selected form the Hambantota District in
appreciations of the role-played by them in the social and economic
development of the country by being engaged in the enterprises as the
breadwinners of their families.
The Hambantota Youth Entrepreneurs programme was identified as the
most suitable institute in Sri Lanka to introduce the mission of the
Loomba Trust to the country in order to realise its aims and objective
in a more successful manner.
The Hambantota Youth Business Programme (HYBP), which is linked to
the Youth Business International (YBI) operating in around forty
countries in the world following a concept of the Price of Wales Trust
of UK, was started as a special project of the Hambantota District
Chamber of Commerce in 1997.
This Programme helps the underprivileged youth of the Hambantota
District to realise their business dreams by providing them financial
facilities as well as advocacy.
It also acts as the Sri Lankan Trustee of The Loomba Trust.
The Loomba Trust Project credit scheme too is being implemented as a
special credit scheme among those implemented by the HYBP since March
2007.
Provision of credit facilities to widows to start and improve
business ventures on their own is being done very successfully in the
Hambantota District and a number of beneficiaries who have received
credit assistance from The Loomba Trust Project during the last period
of one year are gainfully engaged in their business activities at the
moment.
Director General of the HDCC, Azmi Thassim, thanked the trust for the
assistance given to widows in the Hambantota district. |
