Family get-together of Peradeniya Alumni

The family get-together of Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya, Colombo Chapter, will be held on Sunday, June 29, at the Shalika Hall, Park Road, Colombo 5, commencing at 10 a.m.

An array of activities such as games, competitions, draws are planned to make this day a memorable one.

Music will be provided by Mahanama Wicramasinghe and his group with Nissanka Diddeniya and Jayasri Chandragith of Maname-Sinhabahu fame doing the vocals.


Vigilance pays off

Vigilant police detected 750 grams of C-4 high explosives hidden along the railway bridge in the Nawayalathenna area last Friday.

On May 20 minor damage was caused when a time bomb exploded at the pedestrian crossing along this bridge.

Following this explosion, Police have been conducting daily security operations along this railway bridge before train services commence.

It was on one of these daily security operations that the high explosives were detected by a Civil Security Force Officer.

Meanwhile, trains on the Matale-Kandy route are operating on schedule.


All religious musical recital in Jaffna

An all religious musical recital was conducted for the first time in Jaffna sponsored by the Shri Sathya Sai Baba Organisation in Jaffna at the Nallu Young Artists Mandapam.

Head of the Hindu, Catholic, Christian and Islamic faiths graced the recital. The Hindu religion was represented by Sivasri Mahadeva Kurukkal, the Catholics by Bishop of Jaffna Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Saundranayagam, Christian faith by Rt. Rev. Dr. Daniel Thiagarajah, Bishop of the Church of South India, Jaffna diocese.

R. Vasanthasenan, District Judge, Jaffna and president Sri Sathya Sai Baba Organisations, Jaffna district, welcomed the prelates and said the purpose of having an all religious musical recital was to forge unity among the different religions in this country and to pray for lasting peace and harmony.


AGM

The 48th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Library Association will be held on June 25 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Auditorium, No. 100, Independence Square, Colombo 7.

The chief guest will be Prof. Sumanapala Galmangoda, Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies.

The inaugural session and awards ceremony will commence at 9 a.m. followed by the AGM at 11 a.m.


Musical show

Handsawani-2, a musical show organised for the second time by the Oriental Musical Unit of Devi Balika Vidyalaya will be held on Friday, June 27 at the Dr. Wimala de Silva auditorium at 6.30 p.m.


Islamic day

The Muslim Students Majlis of St. Joseph’s College (Boys) School in Grandpass has organised an annual Islamic Day celebration and prize giving on June 24 at 10.30 a.m. at the college hall.

Petroleum and Petroleum Resources Development Minister A. H. M. Fowzie will be the chief guest. Colombo Municipal Councillor M. H. Manzil, Moulavi Zahran Hassan and M. R. Azad will be the guest speakers.

Principal of the college Rev. Fr. Marius Fernando will preside.
