Financial assistance for flood victims

Plans are afoot to grant financial assistance for flood victims in
Kalutara District to renovate their houses which were damaged due to the
recent territorial rains, Construction and Engineering Services Minister
Rajitha Senaratne told the Daily News.
He said Rs. 100,000 and technical guidance will be granted to each
beneficiary family to carry out renovation activities.
On the guidance of Construction and Engineering Services Minister
Rajitha Senaratne, Chamber of Construction Industries of Sri Lanka and
National Construction Association of Sri Lanka will engage in the
renovation work, Ministry sources said.
Minister Senaratne said they are seeking the assistance of NGOs and
Philanthropists. The participation of NGOs and philanthropists is
crucial to implement this renovation project for the sake of flood
victims in Kalutara district.
“Building materials, construction equipment, roofing sheets and other
essential items are the need of the hour,” he said.
Minister Senaratne held discussions with Resettlement and Disaster
Relief Services Minister Rishard Badhiudeen and Kalutara District
Secretary S. Hapuarachchi regarding the renovation programme and
immediate relief work to be carried out in case of any sudden disaster
situations.
According to the statistics Kalutara district was the worst hit
district owing to the recent territorial rains. The entire Kalutara
District was hit by the floods.
Bulathsinhala, Palinda Nuwara, Dhodangoda, Millathiya, Kaluthara and
Ingiriya Divisional Secretariat Divisions were hit worst due to the
territorial rains.
Special attention has been paid towards the allocation of rations and
relief measures in case of any sudden disaster situations.
All officials have been kept in alert to face any sudden disaster
situations and to carry out relief works.
Minister Senaratne stated that with this project those lived in small
houses too will get the houses with proper standards.
