Most Ven. Lenagala Sumedananda Thera passes away

The Chief Incumbent of Kotikawatte Sri Nagarukkarama Viharaya and Medagoda Sri Nandanarama Viharaya, Most Ven. Lenagala Sumedananda Thera passed away at the age of 83.

The funeral is scheduled to take place on Thursday at Sri Dharmapala College playground in Kotikawatta. At the time of demise Sumedananda Thera held the dual position of being the Chief Prelate of Kalyani Sama Sri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha and the Chief Buddhist monk for North America.


Wage hike for security guards shortly - SLASSPA

The Sri Lanka Security Service Providers’ Association (SLASSPA) which is the voice of the industry with over 100 major security providers forming its membership is working closely with the Defence, Public Security, Law and Order Ministry to improve the image of the industry as a whole.

The Department of Labour has issued a notification on May 22, 2008 under the Wages Board Ordinance to increase the salaries of security guards by approximately Rs. 2,500 per month.

Security service companies will be bound by law to pay this increase from the effective date upon gazette notification. Non compliance will be a violation of the law as this is a statutory requirement. As has been the practice in the past, security companies will be compelled to pass on this increase to the client in order to meet the enhancement of costs, the SLASSPA said.


Police swoop nabs 72 at Polonnaruwa

Seventy Two suspects have been taken into custody by a sudden raid conducted throughout Pollonnaruwa district last Friday mobilising more than 200 police officers, said Polonnaruwa SSP Jayantha Weeramantri.

More than 25 persons who were unable to confirm their identity were among the suspects.

SSP Weeramantri said that the Police also arrested 48 including 15 who had arrest warrants, seven drunken drivers and 26 suspects wanted for alleged rape offences.


Poya Day lecture

The Poya Day lecture organised by the Conference of Sri Lankan Malays (COSLAM) will be held on Wednesday, June 18 at 10 a.m. at the YMMA auditorium, No.63, Dematagoda Road, Colombo 9.

Moulavi M.S.M. Hisham (Hashimi) Katheeb, Kirulapone, Jumma Mosque, Colombo 6 will be the guest speaker.


Musical show

A musical show titled DS Swarna Sara will be held commencing at 7 p.m. on June 24 at the BMICH in aid of computer laboratory of the Primary Section of D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo 07.

The S.L.B.C. Orchestra, Victor Ratnayake, Sunil Edirisinghe, T.M. Jayarathne, Ishak Baig, Nirosha Virajani, Rodny Warnakula, Sivakumar and Nilukshi will attend. Music will be by Wasantha Rohana.


Cancelled

P. Udaya Perera, the organiser, Karagampitiya Maas Blood Donation Camp wishes to inform the blood donors and volunteers who extended their services that the said programme scheduled to be held on Poson Poya Day June 18 has been cancelled.


Special induction ceremony

Four eminent scientists who through their work have attained a high level of excellence in their chosen scientific fields will be inducted as Fellows of the National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka at a special Induction Ceremony which will be held on June 20 at the Auditorium of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science.

General Secretary of the Academy, Eng. Mervyn Gunasekera in a press release states that annually the National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka elects, through a number of parameters such as academic excellence, achievements in application of science and technology for economic development and quality of life, contribution to infrastructure development in science and technology, etc., eminent scientists as Fellows.

The Fellows who will be inducted are: Prof. B.M. Ratnayake Bandara, Prof. Rohan Rajapaksa, Prof. Kemal Ismail Deen and Prof. Vasanthi Thevanesam.

Eng. Gunasekera further also stated that the newly elected Fellows will make presentations on their views and visions for the development of the field of scientific endeavour in a way best suited to serve the interests of the nation. Prof. Sunethra Atukorala, President of the Academy, will chair the Induction Ceremony which will end with a Fellowship Dinner.


Sharddhanjalee

The Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation presents well known lyric composer poet W.K. Sarath Wimalasiri through the Sharddhanjalee programme from 12 Noon to 12.45 p.m. on June 18 (Poson Full Moon Poya day). He makes an analytical presentation of the songs composed, based on various themes in Buddhist literature.
