Joyfully reminisces
I joyfully reminisce Elmo Rodrigopulle's article on Football in the
"Daily News", especially how formidable the St. Benedict's College
football teams were in those yesteryears.
In fact, I captained the year 1963 to an unbeaten unofficial
islandiwde championship with several double digit wins and zero goal
against us, and our winning prize was a trip to Jaffna to play a couple
of schools there during the fun peace times.
One of my proud moments in school football was the two years I kept
goals for St. Benedicts College, our rival school St. Joseph never
scored a single goal against me, and the second game was played at the
brand new Sugathadasa Stadium in 1963 which we won by 3-0 in front of
nearly 10,000 spectators.
I believe we had one of the best coaches in football too at that
time, the late Albert Fernando. I am proud to hear Sri Lanka is doing
great in international football and even has beaten India at times.
Even though it is the poor man's sport in Sri Lanka it is the most
popular sport in the world, where World Cup is the biggest and most
watched sport event in the planet. Thanks and keep up the good work Elmo
