Army Chief updates US defence officials on security situation
Two senior officials of the US Department of Defence to make a first
hand assessment of the current security and operational situation in the
country met Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka at his
office in the Army Headquarters.
Chris Clary and Amir Latif of the office of US Secretary Defence,
accompanied by LTC James E. Oxley, USA, Defence Attache, discussed
issues pertaining to the security situation and cordial relations
between the US Army and the Sri Lankan Army during this formal meeting
on Wednesday.
The Army Commander, giving a detailed account of security
developments in Wanni and terror attacks, briefed the delegates on
Army's different operational strategies, adopted in the humanitarian
mission to liberate the Wanni from LTTE clutches. He pointed out that
these steps have helped weaken Tiger terrorists to a greater degree and
salvaged many civilians from their grip.
The Commander also outlined measures implemented by area Headquarters
for relocation of civilians who desert uncleared areas and reach troops
in search of protection and safety.
The visiting delegates spoke of the bilateral defence cooperation and
exchange programmes between both countries and emphasised the need for
further promotion of such cooperation with more training programmes.
During their two-day stay in Sri Lanka they are scheduled to meet the
Defence Secretary, Chief of Defence Staff, Navy and Air Force Commanders
and visit several area headquarters. |
