More rice stocks to market

The Government has begun releasing sufficient rice stocks stored as a
buffer stocks in the State owned stores to the market at concessionary
rates aiming to supply ample rice without any shortage.

Minister Bandula Gunawardana told the Daily News that the Food
Commissioner's Department (FCD) is releasing sufficient rice stocks
daily to Co-operatives and Sathosa branches countrywide to provide rice
at Rs. 60 per kilo to consumers.
"We release adequate rice stocks to welfare societies of State owned
Departments, Boards and other organisations on the approval of the
Secretary in the related Ministry through the Food Commissioner's
Department in Narahenpita at a concessionary rate," the Minister said.
"Though Co-operatives have an opportunity to obtain sufficient red
nadu and white rice stocks from the FCD at Rs. 57 per kilo, several
co-operatives do not come to the FCD to get sufficient rice stocks to
their places as they cannot obtain commissions through those
transactions," he said.
