More rice stocks to market

The Government has begun releasing sufficient rice stocks stored as a buffer stocks in the State owned stores to the market at concessionary rates aiming to supply ample rice without any shortage.

Trade, Marketing Development, Co-operatives, Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardana told the Daily News that the Food Commissioner's Department (FCD) is releasing sufficient rice stocks daily to Co-operatives and Sathosa branches countrywide to provide rice at Rs. 60 per kilo to consumers.

"We release adequate rice stocks to welfare societies of State owned Departments, Boards and other organisations on the approval of the Secretary in the related Ministry through the Food Commissioner's Department in Narahenpita at a concessionary rate," the Minister said.

"Though Co-operatives have an opportunity to obtain sufficient red nadu and white rice stocks from the FCD at Rs. 57 per kilo, several co-operatives do not come to the FCD to get sufficient rice stocks to their places as they cannot obtain commissions through those transactions," he said.
