Shirley Wijesinghe
The Government in planning to form an aircraft fleet to conduct raids
on unauthorised fishing trawlers in Sri Lanka's territorial waters,
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Felix Perera, said.
"There will be no room for unauthorised foreign vessels to enter Sri
Lanka's territorial waters hereafter," Minister Perera stressed.
Minister Perera was addressing a gathering after launching the Outer
Suction Dredger for removal of sand barriers in the Chilaw lagoon delta
and sea.
The Otter Suction Dredger purchased by the Fishery Harbours
Cooperation for Rs. 130 million will be put in operation at the proposed
Fishery Harbour at Chilaw. Minister Perera said the need for a Dredger
was a long-felt requirement of the Chilaw fishing community and it was
also helpful for them to bring their fishing boats and vessels directly
from the sea to the lagoon for unloading and repairing.
The Minister also said there will be no development without providing
infrastructure facilities related to the industry. This has been the
position of President Mahinda Rajapaksa that is reflected in his 10 year
development plan under the 'Mahinda Chinthana'.
Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Neomal Perera said
a longstanding demand for a Fishery Harbour for Chilaw will be a reality
with the completion of the harbour within the next three months.
He also appreciated the services provided to the people of Chilaw
under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
