No request from EU to change Constitution

COLOMBO: Export Development and International Trade Minister Prof. G.L.Peiris yesterday assured that the European Union (EU) has never asked the Government to change its Constitution as a condition to obtain the GSP Plus.

No such demand has ever been made by the EU to the Government to change the Constitution to provide the GSP Plus facility, the Minister told the weekly Cabinet press briefing yesterday.

"The Government has no intention whatsoever of changing the Constitution. The Government has no reason to change it. The Supreme Court has clearly given a ruling on this matter. So we do not need any amendment to the Constitution," he said. "The Supreme Court has given a categorical answer to this issue which is the only supreme body which can comment on this issue."
