Rs. 6 million ransom extortion attempt

Flying officer, SI among indicted

Five including a retired Flying Officer and a Sub Inspector of police were indicted before the Colombo High Court for conspiring a Rs. 6 million ransom from a businessman at Cinnamon Garden in July 2006.

The indictment was filed by the Attorney General Department against retired Flying Officer K. D. Nishantha Gajanayake, Sub Inspector of Prime Ministerial Security Division C. Indika Dalandawatta, Police Constable W. M. Sampath Preethiviraj, Air Force Officer K. A. Jayasiri Kodithuwakku and Prabala Pillei Kandarasa of Urani, Batticaloa.

The case was filed against them for conspiring at Wellawatta and Cinnamon Garden between July 18 and 20 in 2006 to abduct Nadarajah Sri Scandarajah alias Seeni Mudalali to extort ransom.

Scandarajah was abducted on July 20, 2006 and Ramaiyah Jeyaraj was also abducted at the same incident. The charges also include that they conspired to urge wife of Scandarajah, Yogarani Sri Scandarajah to pay the ransom of Rs 6 million.

The indictment included four counts.
