As the Government is trying to uproot terrorists, terrorists try to
hide the genocide bombs in every nook and corner where they can kill
many innocent civilians. These defeated terrorists' next target might be
school children.
Some major projects have been implemented in schools to strengthen
security. But the problem is do these children only attend school, what
about other institutions? On most weekends and weekday afternoons, some
cities are crowded with students attending tuition classes.
I guess, nobody will hesitate to name those cities as tuition cities
due to the massive number of students. It's doubtful that every tuition
class can provide sufficient security.
There are thousands of students packed in classes even without proper
ventilation. What will happen if these heartless terrorists attack one
of these classes? Will the card which is given by the institute help
with the security? Shouldn't immediate action be taken before any major
disaster occurs?

As a mark of respect to a distinguished and noble person of the
South, the statue of H. W. Amarasuriya was installed at the roundabout
leading to H. W. Amarasuriya Mawatha in Galle. In unequivocal terms H.
W. Amarasuriya was a rare person who won the gratitude of the nation.
He was a philanthropist, who contributed his wealth and time for the
cause of education in this country. People bow to him in veneration and
gratitude for the services he rendered to promote good education in this
country. The old boys of Mahinda College and old girls of Sangamitta
together with the general public of Galle will bear testimony in this
regard.
However, this statue was removed from its original place for
re-building the roundabout.
This statue was removed about two years ago and was temporarily
placed in the wilderness and it is still lying in a very dis-respectful
manner by the side of the road in Talbort Town. Tears come to my eyes
when I go passing this statue of this distinguished person. He merits a
superior position vis-a-vis his other colleagues in Galle.
I appeal to the authorities concerned to give priority to restore
this statue in its original place to crown the nation's gratitude on
him.

I have SLT's IDD facility. They bill at Rs. 26 per minute for a call
to Australia whereas private communication centres charge from Rs. 7 to
Rs. 10 per minute. Even pre paid IDD cards are billed around Rs. 8 per
minute.
This is outrageous and downright fleecing.
No wonder SLT proclaims they make 100 per cent profit, at our
expense.

The Wednesday fair that functions just opposite the Kalutara North
Police station is a big nuisance to the people who live in Kalutara
North and its suburbs.
It's very sad and irritable to mention that those who go marketing at
this fair are greatly inconvenienced by vendors who display various
products and small items for sale just in the middle of the road
blocking the passage of those who patronise the fair.
Once these vendors were banned by the Kalutara North Police but now
the situation has changed. There are too many people who go passing this
busy fair road, to their homes and even they are badly inconvenienced by
these unfair and selfish sellers.
Apart from these annoying vendors, three-wheelers and lorries cause a
threat to customers who visit this public fair. I kindly appeal to the
responsible authorities to make legal arrangements to ban entry of all
types of vehicles and prohibit vendors from obstructing the free
movement along the road leading to this fair.
Please allow free access to those who patronise this fair to allow
them to buy their requirements without any hindrance or obstruction.
This will make the Kalutara North Wednesday fair an attractive and
pleasant market place.

Every morning on my way to office I pass two pillar boxes (One red
and one green) opposite the Bo-tree at the cross roads at Hyde Park
Corner and Park Street.
Heaps of garbage bags are dumped for collection right in front of
these letter boxes obstructing access to them. Crows pull out garbage
from these bags and also perch on these boxes.
These are the pillar boxes, I use to post my letters and I find it
difficult to approach them due to garbage and crows.
Why must anybody dump garbage right in front of the letter boxes
instead of the side or a couple of feet away?
I hope the relevant authorities will take the necessary action to let
us post our letters without having to walk over garbage and being
attacked by crows.
CONCERNED CITIZEN, Colombo 2
This is in respect of a request to the Minister of Transport for a
school bus for the students in the Colombo 6 area, where most of the
girls' schools are located.
A news item appearing in the Daily News dated February 26 states that
the Minister has decided to provide 100 more buses to school children
under the project of Sisu Seriya. I am sure instructions will also go
out to the authorities concerned to provide buses to the girls' schools
in the Colombo 6 area.
It will be an added 'bonus' if parents could buy concessionary
(Season) tickets for these students to travel to and from school in SLTB
buses and school buses.
Parents will be very grateful to the Minister of Transport if he is
able to provide the above facility and relieve parents of this hardship.
