Sterilisation programme for dogs in Central Province

The Health Ministry in the Central Province in collaboration with the Association of Veterinarians For Human Management of the Animal Population has commenced a sterilisation programme for dogs in the Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Matale districts to prevent the threat of rabies.

The Ministry has allocated Rs. 15 million to implement this programme.

The Chairman of the Association of Veterinarians For Human Management of Animal Population Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara told the Daily News that after completion of this programme in the Central Province, it is expected to implement this programme in the Uva and Sabaragamuwa Provinces.


Pre-school children get uniform material

Uniform material was distributed among 140 pre-school children in five pre-schools in Maligaikadu in the Karativu Divisional Secretariat area. Organised by the Al Ameen Sri Lanka Education Unit.

Simultaneously each pre-school teacher also received Rs. 1,000 as uniform allowances at the ceremony. Co-ordinator Al-Ameen Sri Lanka M.A.M. Mansoor and president of Safa Friendship organisation U.L.M. Riyas also participated.


Aid in a novel way, a pilgrimage for around 700

There are many ways to help those who are in need of help and Laxaman Wasanta Perera - Chief SLFP organiser for Matale did it in a novel way.

He funded a visit of devotees and accompanied them on a Pilgrimage to the Kelaniya temple.

The group comprised around 700 pilgrims, from the Raththota area off Matale. After morning worship at the historic temple, the pilgrims listened to a Dhamma sermon (bana), made by Ven. Dodampahala Sri Rahula Thera, at Wasanta's residence in Makola in the afternoon. A group of monks from temples in the Raththota area also joined this pilgrimage.


Cycle thefts: two teens in custody

Anuradhapura: A 15-year-old attending a leading boys school in Anuradhapura was arrested in connection with the alleged theft of four push bicycles and a motorcycle.

Another boy aged 18 was taken into custody for aiding and abetting. The main suspect was ordered to be kept in the custody of the Abaya Children's Home, Anuradhapura while the other was remanded.


Sri Parakrama Maha Vidyalaya's principal retires

The principal of Sri Parakrama Maha Vidyalaya Panagoda Homagama R. P. De Silva recently retired after serving 36 years as a teacher a deputy principal and principal. He has been an exemplified teacher to his students and a social worker in the area. The teachers and the students of Sri Parakrama Vidyalaya wish him good health and long life.


DIG Mendis assumes duties today

Newly promoted Deputy Inspector General of Police Sisira Mendis will assume duties as Head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Sisira Mendia, an old boy of Nalanda College, Colombo has served at Vavuniya, the operational areas, and was the Director, CID. He has served the Police Department for thirty years. (SM)
