The Inland Revenue Department has recognised one of the leading
maritime personalities, Ruwan Wickramanayake by awarding him with a gold
card.
Wickramanayake, brother of Master Divers, Chairman, Ariyasiri, said
that he was qualified to receive this Gold card for regularly paying
income tax annually over Rs. 1.5 million.
"I am happy with the response form the Inland Revenue to honour by
awarding me with the Gold preference card," he said. The Gold Card
issued by the Inland Revenue departmentwould result enabling the holder
to use the Green Channel at the Colombo airport and get preferential
treatment at the Port as well as both in the People's Bank and Bank of
Ceylon.
He said that in addition to the government banks the private banks
too should try to come up with a scheme to honor and provide
preferential treatment to Gold cardholders. He also said that the
Department should give more publicity about the benefit that is offered
to genuine taxpayers.
Commenting on the proposed Hambantota harbour he said that the
decision to speed up construction is a step taken in the right
direction. "The proposed harbour would also ease congestion at the
Colombo Port and bring in additional revenue by way of offering ship
repair and bunkering facilities for ships that pass the Hambantota
seas," he said.
