The Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulligal won eight out of the nine bodies up for grabs in Monday's Local Government Elections for the Batticaloa district with the jewel of the crown, the Batticaloa Municipal Council, going to the UPFA that contested with TMVP backing.

Mass Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardane yesterday said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a letter dated March 7 asked the Commissioner of Elections to declare March 14th as the nomination date for the Eastern Provincial Council election.

US$ 1b Mumbai investment for housing

Bharti Airtel Lanka and the Atlantis Developments Private (Ltd) have signed two agreements with BoI yesterday to commence two new projects in Sri Lanka. Our construction projects consist of 60,000 houses with an estimated cost of US$ 1 b and US$ 500 million had already been allocated for the first project. First phase of the project will be located in Rajagiriya, in one and half acre land.
