Yvonne wins Cinnamon Grand Golf Classic

It does augur well for Ladies' golf in the country, to find an
increasing number of them frequenting the course of the Royal Colombo
Golf Club. Much enthusiasm and excitement does prevail amongst them, as
they compete in the many tournaments organised and conducted by the
ladies section of the RCGC, with the assistance of sponsors.
Evidence of this was seen in the Cinnamon Grand Classic, which was
brought to a successful close last week with the active support of
Cinnamon Grand as sponsors for the past three years.
The significance of the Cinnamon Grand Classic, lies in that it is
played over the year, 12 months, on the stableford format, with a round
of golf played each month. The tournament has proved popular through the
years and as in the past drew many to this twelve - month competition,
where at the end, the 10 best stableford scores are taken to be the
decisive factor.
Yvonne Abhayaratne, who has made quite a name for herself as an avid
golfer, having won a good many local golf competitions, turned out to be
the contending force in the 2007 Cinnamon Grand Classic.
She played consistently well right through the year 2007, with
sustained effort and approach to clinch the title, during the last week
of January this year.
Mrs. H.R. Bang, the 2006 winner had to rest content as runner up,
with Kumari Herath, coming in as 2nd runner-up. The year long golf
classic was most fittingly brought to an end with the awards ceremony
and dinner hosted by the sponsors, Cinnamon Grand. |
