In a bid to promote innovation in Sri Lanka, the Ministry of
Education (MoE) of Sri Lanka, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the
Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), and Intel(r) Education
jointly organized the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) in
Colombo.
Three national level winners of the SLSEF will represent Sri Lanka at
the renowned Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel
ISEF) which will take place in May this year at Atlanta, Georgia. Two of
the winners will compete at Intel ISEF while the other will participate
as an observer.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for SLSEF was signed on
February 7 at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Sri Lanka by
representatives of the four organizations spearheading the project.
This is the second year in a row that SLSEF is being hosted.
The objectives of the MoU include the organization of the Sri Lanka
Science and Engineering Fair to promote innovation amongst school
children and youth in the country, foster development of a scientific
temperament, promotion of SLSEF as a platform for science students to
discover their scientific genius and win public recognition at national
and international level, and the eligibility of National level winners
of SLSEF to represent Sri Lanka at Intel International Science and
Engineering Fair.
Regional Manager, Intel EM Limited -Sri Lanka Liaison office Indika
de Zoysa said, “Great ideas start with great opportunities. Sri Lankan
youth have a lot to offer this country and indeed the world, provided
they are given necessary encouragement and support.
This event was organized with the objective of creating learning and
development opportunities for innovative thinking that would benefit Sri
Lankan economy; we possess a multitude of brilliant individuals who have
the potential to contribute revolutionary ideas.
We thus need to identify these individuals and support them in order
for us to move forward and develop as a nation.
Promoting development and innovation has always been a part of
Intel’s creed, where we have invested more than U.S. $ 1 Billion in
education programs and still continue to expand programs in areas of
science and maths education.”
The Sri Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) was duly
affiliated with Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)
in USA for the first time in October 2007.
