Asanga heads Western Province RFU

Asanga Seneviratne was elected as President of the Western Province
Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) while the other Office Bearers who were in
the same position as last year remain uncontested at the 16th Annual
General Meeting recommended by the out going Council members which was
held at the CH and FC Auditorium on January 29.
The WPRFU was appointed by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU)
in 1992 and the first President elected in 1993 was former SSP Sumith
Silva. Asanga the former St. Thomas College and CR & FC player also
former National Coach, Chairman of the National Team Selection Committee
& the present Vice President of SLRFU revealed that he suggested the
Defence Services team also to compete this year in the A division League
Tournaments to give more encouragement also looking for a head quarters
for the WPFU.
Also said that the Union wants to get down the service of an
International Coach to National Team to take team to higher level for
Sevens and assist the WPRFU too, also the Unions ambition is to build up
a strong B Division Tournament this year. Three new clubs were also
enrolled to the WPRFU namely: The Old Weslyites, CWW Kannangara and
Royal College (Panadura) under the approval of the council.
The Officials representing the clubs were Air Commodore Saranath
Rambukwela (Air Force), Brigadier M.Z.R. Sallay (Army), Sudath Sampath
(Police). Also present were Fazal Mohamed (Past President), T.M.L. Hamid
(Past President), N.J. Mudannayaka (coordinator WPRFU) and a host of
other officials from other clubs.
