Indian Coast Guard on alert

The Indian Coast Guard is “closely monitoring” the influx of Tamil refugees to ensure that Tigers “don’t slip through”, a top Commander said yesterday.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and keeping a close watch to ensure that other elements don’t slip through with the refugees,” Coast Guard chief Vice Admiral Rusi Contractor said ahead of its 31st anniversary.

“We are monitoring the situation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but it is possible that one or two (Tigers) might slip through,” Contractor added.

Asked about reports that Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief V. Prabhakaran had entered Tamil Nadu, he said: “We don’t have any information on that.” IANS
