YMCA's int'l partners meet in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka YMCA and its international partners will hold their final tsunami response meeting on January 23-25 in Sri Lanka.

The meeting organised by the National Council of the YMCAs of Sri Lanka will evaluate the tsunami rehabilitation programmes conducted in Sri Lanka during the past three years. The team known as 'Sri Lanka Tsunami Partner Group', met every year to review the tsunami rehabilitation project implemented in Sri Lanka.

Chris Roles, Y-Care International UK, CEO Chris Roles is the chairman of the group. Representatives from UK, US, India, Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan and Switzerland will participate in this final meeting at the YMCA International Centre at Kurana, Katunayake. The Sri Lanka YMCA team will be headed by Sri Lanka Tsunami Task Committee Chairman Eraj Wijesinghe.

The Sri Lanka YMCAs first provided immediate relief to 10,000 families affected by the tsunami, and then Rs. 50,000 was provided to 500 families to repair damaged houses. Under the Y-Village Housing Scheme, two hundred and nine houses were built in Galle, Matara, Paiyagala, Point Pedro, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Kalmunai.

National General Secretary of the National Council of the YMCAs of Sri Lanka Chrisantha Hettiaratchi said, he believed that the international partners would agree on further annual meetings to consider helping the Sri Lankan community development activities.

The Sri Lanka YMCAs offered much assistance to Sri Lankan communities and there are much more to be done in the future.

The international representatives are scheduled to visit several Y-village tsunami housing sites and open a 31-unit housing scheme at China Bay, Trincomalee.
