St. Anthony’s College colours awards on Saturday
S.M. Jifferey Abdeen, Kandy sports corr.
The colours award ceremony of St. Anthony’s College, Kandy will be
held at the Rev. Fr. Resatic Memorial Hall of the school on Saturday
commencing at 5 p.m.
The colours awarding ceremony of this leading school in the hill
capital which has been in existence for over 153 years was last held in
1992, when colours, Eagles and Super Eagles were awarded to top
sportsmen who had brought honour to the school and excelled in their own
field of sports.
The Principal of the school at the time the colours award ceremony
was last held was Rev. Fr. Stephen Abrahams, whose love for sports knew
no bounds and was over willing to help the media inthe coverage of
sports items.
The same cannot be said in the period which followed his tenure as
principle.
It was during the days of Principalship of Fr. Stephen Abrahams that
cricketing stars like Muthaih Muralitharan, Ruwan Kalpage, Piyal
Wijetunge, Sajith Fernando, Nuwan Kalpage just to name a few emerged
from this great institution. The first three named not only played for
the national team and they played together in the Test match against
South Africa.
The present Principal Rev. Fr. Titus Rodrigo who assumed duties last
year was quick to realise the revival of the colours award ceremony and
the idea took root. Dickie Dunuwille as Chairmen of the organising
committed and Anton Perera as Secretary and Co-ordinated by Chandra
Mahawattege are sparing no pains to make this event a grand success.
