SWRD 108th birth anniversary

The 108th birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike falls today.

The commemoration ceremony will be held at the S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike statue at Galle Face, Colombo, this afternoon.

Members of the Maha Sangha and other religious leaders, SLFP General Secretyary Minister Maithripala Sirisaena, members of the Bandaranaike family and relatives, Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana, Ministers, MPs, Provincial Council, Municipal Council members, Ambassadors and High Commissioners and political party/trade union representatives are expected to attend the simple ceremony.

Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike was the founder of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which led a coalition to win the 1956 General Election. The 1956 Government started an unprecedented social revolution. He was assassinated on September 26, 1959.
