Two spectators, both foreigners suffered very minor injuries when the
roofing sheets in one of the covered stands constructed for the First
Cricket Test between Sri Lanka and England got blown off by a strong
gust of wind at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy.
The injured spectators were rushed for out door treatment at a near
by private nursing home and discharged immediately after treatment. They
were book to witness the cricket match. It is not the nature of the
injuries which is in question here but the way these temporary sheds
were constructed which will result in the country losing credibility.
A spokesman for the Kandy District Cricket Association disclaimed any
involvement in the construction of these temporary sheds. It was all
done by Colombo and even the contractor was from Colombo and all
materials were transported from Colombo for this. This incident could
have been avoided if the roofing sheets in question were tied with steel
wires as it is normally done as a precautionary measure.
Discreet inquiries revealed that all work relating to this match were
handled from Colombo sidelining the local District Cricket Association.
Even the chairs were brought from Colombo.
The local Association were asked to supply meals to the media and a
stop gap electrician was at hard. |
