BoC wins Ceylon Chamber's CSR Award for education and training

The Award for Education and Training at the Ten Best Corporate Citizens Awards 2007 organised by The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce was won by Bank of Ceylon for its 'Viyaparika A-Z' programme.

Accolade: Dr. Ashoka Jinadasa receiving the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce CSR Award for Education and Training for Bank of Ceylon from Prof. G.L. Peiris in the presence of Dr. Jamshed Irani and Prof. Lakshman Watawala.

Bank of Ceylon developed this educational and training programme.

'Viyaparika A-Z' gives entrepreneurs the practical knowledge, insights and training needed to plan, start, fund, manage and develop a business.

It encourages and helps entrepreneurially-inclined people all over Sri Lanka to start a business of their own in order to increase their income and also generate employment.

This CSR programme provides the knowledge and training needed to strengthen small and medium entrepreneurship to an extent where it can support the national economy.

By motivating people even with a lower education to start a business and earn money, it provides a viable strategy for poverty alleviation in areas with lesser employment opportunities.

By encouraging lower income groups to increase their income through their own efforts, it fosters financial inclusion and paves the way for geographically uniform economic development with greater economic and social equity. It also fosters financial literacy by promoting the banking habit and financial discipline among entrepreneurs, and weaning them away from unscrupulous moneylenders.

This comprehensive CSR programme developed and implemented islandwide by Bank of Ceylon comprised two key components: A weekly educational TV series of 44 episodes telecast over 10 months to reach most households in the country, and a series of 47 half-day workshops for entrepreneurs in most parts of the island.
