Chairman of Laugfs Holdings Limited W.K.H. Wegapitiya received the
award for Sri Lankan Entrepreneur of the Year. The Sri Lankan
Entrepreneur of the Year Awards ceremony organised by the Federation of
Chambers of Commerce of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) for the 12th consecutive year
was held at the BMICH last Friday.
Norwegian Ambassador Tore Hattrem who was the chief guest said
entrepreneurship is one of the most important methods to overcome the
poverty levels in Sri Lanka, because it improves the standard of living
of the rural population and leads to regional development.
President of the FCCISL Nawaz Rajabdeen said entrepreneurship
promotes economic and industrial growth across the country.
Entrepreneurship promotes economic development because it encourages
people to develop their businesses and therefore it is essential to
uplift the standard of living of the population.
Rajabdeen also stated that the awards are presented to entrepreneurs
judged on provincial level and national level.
“The FCCISL is also helping tsunami affected entrepreneurs. The
thinking behind this was that after the tsunami, these people had to
build their businesses from scratch and therefore they deserve a special
mention, this is also a great opportunity for small and medium level
entrepreneurs,” he said. |
