The Sri Lanka Postal Department is an untapped gold mine, which has
to be, urgently made use of, said the President of Federation of Chamber
of Commerce and Industry, Nawaz Rajabdeen. He said that the department
should start a courier service which would bring the department
financial benefits.

The Department already has post offices and sub-post offices spread
on over Sri Lanka “in addition they also have a distribution network
(delivering letters) unmatched by none”.
The Department could first commence this operation by delivering
parcels belonging to various government institutions. He said that they
could also deliver various parcels and items from local expatriate
workers, at a lower rate than the private sector.
He also said that they should try to provide a better service at the
tele shops.
“An Interned Cafe to every post office and a detailed bill to
telephone users would also bring in more customers and can bring more
revenue,” he said.
Another business they can look to is the mobile top up cards.
Rajabdeen said that the postal department should now look away from
issuing only first day covers and new stamps”, he said. The local Postal
Department is no where close to the foreign postal services despite
being for well over 100 years. |
