Burglaries in Jaffna during curfew
Jaffna spl. corr.
Three burglaries took place in the Jaffna municipal area last Friday
night while the curfew was in force. Fifteen armed men broke open three
houses and spirited away Rs. 1.5 million worth of jewellery, Rs. 100,000
and a Mercedes Benz car. They had abandoned the car after it hit a
parapet wall.
Media Workshop
The Ananda College Creative Writers Circle will conduct a media
workshop titled Ananda’s Glory 2007 in association with the ANCL Friday
weekly at 9.30 a.m. today at the College Hall. Western Province Governor
Alavi Mowlana will be the chief guest.
ANCL Chairman Bandula Padmakumara, Friday Editor Prasad Gunawardena,
Art TV CEO Chandima Udabage and C.W. Mackie and Co. Limited GM Anura
Edirisinghe will deliver presentations.
Oxford-Cambridge debate
An Oxford Union Style Debate will be staged by the combined Societies
of Cambridge and Oxford today at 7 p.m. at the British Council. The
theme will be “This House believes that all important Cabinet decisions
should be based on Astrology”.
Speakers for the Proposition will be led by Dominick Chilcott, UK
High Commissioner (Oxford) while the speakers for the Opposition will be
led by Vijaya Malalasekera (Cambridge).
“Anger Management” dialogue programme
The Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre Sri Lanka has organised a special
dialogue programme for young professionals on the topic “Anger
Management” which will be held on Tuesday, October 30 at 6.00 p.m. at
74, Davidson Road, Bambalapitiya.
Patient requires kidney
Mr. Kathirgamanathan of No. 31A, Castle Lane, Colombo 4 (formerly
Seylan Merchant Bank AGM) is seriously ill is suffering from End Stage
Renal failure and regular Haemodialysis. He requires a live donor with
AB positive kidney for transplant.
He was born with one kidney and requires immediate transplant. Please

Book donation from Indira Gandhi Library
The Sri Lanka India Society which has been formed to foster
friendship between India and Sri Lanka has been donating books from the
Shrimathi Indira Gandhi Memorial Library collection to schools in
various Provinces.
This year the presentation will be made to three schools in Vavuniya.
Three schools will be presented with the Shrimathi Indira Gandhi
Memorial Library collection at the Indian Cultural Centre, at a special
function organised by the Sri Lanka India Society under the chairmanship
of Manik Pereira, President of the Society on Wednesday, October 24
commencing at 4.30 p.m.
The three schools are Vavuniya Tamil Madhya Maha Vidyalayam, Kandy
Road, Vavuniya, Madukanthi Sinhala Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, Madukanthai,
Vavuniya and Muslim Madhya Maha Vidyalayam, Mannar Road, Vavuniya.
The presentation will be made by the High Commissioner for India in
Sri Lanka Alok Prasad.
Workshop
A three-day workshop will be held on library building designs at the
Faculty of Architecture, Moratuwa University from October 29 to 31.
Two German visiting architects sponsored by the German Cultural
Institute and a group of local senior librarians will also take part in
the workshop as resource personnel. The project is a part of the
redevelopment of tsunami damaged libraries in Sri Lanka.
Lecture
The next lecture under the monthly lecture programme of the Sri Lanka
Historical Association, titled, ‘Whom Does the Potgul Vihara Statue
Represent?’ will be delivered by Professor M. Somathilaka, Department of
History, University of Peradeniya at 3.30 p.m. on Thursday, November 1
at the Auditorium of the Sri Lanka National Archives, 7, Reid Avenue,
Colombo 7.
Micro finance at Raddolugama
The presentation of micro finance facilities for 80 women in ‘199
Raddolugama North, by the People’s Bank Seeduwa would take place today
at Madhushantha function hall, at 10 a.m.
Organiser and President of the Women’s Society Melani Ferreira said
these micro loans would be used for self-employment projects for women.
“These would be presented at very low credit,” she said. |
