DLF calls for peace talks
The Democratic Left Front (DLF) in a press release issued called upon
both parties to the present conflict to explore the possibility of
starting talks to create a ceasefire without seeking third party
intervention by a world power.
The release signed by DLF Secretary Vasudeva Nanayakkara said
analysts and intellectuals have both predicted that victory and defeat
in the ongoing North, East war would be equally divided among both
parties to the conflict.
But during the last two years both parties had tried to continue the
war and hundreds had been killed, tens of thousands of people had been
displaced while a similar number had suffered loss of livelihood.
Furthermore this situation had caused immense economic hardship to
others living outside the war zone, he said.
“Even if the war ended decisively with a win to any one party its
recurrence could not be prevented without a political solution to the
causes of the conflict. Even if the North and East war could be subdued
by the military action it would be wrong from the angle of democracy.
It would also be not practical to be continued forever. Therefore
both parties should explore the possibility of having talks to bring
about a ceasefire”, he added.
