There is a dearth of software engineers in the country and Government
universities cannot supply this demand without the contribution of the
private sector, Dean, Informatics Institute of Technology Prof. Alfred
Perera said.
Addressing the media on the 14th annual convocation of IIT which will
be held at the BMICH on November 3. He said the convocation is unique
this year due to the fact that it is the first convocation after IIT's
affiliation with the University of Westminster with 35 students
graduating from all areas of the IT industry.
A panel of delegates from the University of Westminster headed by
Vice Chancellor Rikki Morgan Tamosunas will be present.
Prof. Perera said that the graduate students at IIT get an
opportunity to obtain a one year work visa for UK where they will have
work experience abroad at the completion of the degree which is a very
valuable advantage.
The institute has given 33 scholarships this year on merit to
students who passed the GCE Advanced Level but unable to enter the
university due to lack of space and they work with the industry part
time while doing studies at IIT.
General Manager IIT Vijith Gunawardena said all 1,600 graduates who
passed out from the IIT are in high positions in leading software
companies in Sri Lanka or engaged in lucrative businesses abroad.
He said 120 graduates pass out from the IIT every year and they get
the certificate from the Westminster University in UK. But it costs ten
times more for a student to go to UK and follow the programme. |
