Second gold for Uva soccerites
BERNARD PERERA
Uva Province soccerites defeated North Western Province two goals to
nil on Monday. This victory also gave them a soccer double at the 33rd
National Sports Festival. Prior to this game Uva women soccerites beat
Central Province also with the same margin.
Both teams were evenly balanced and the spectators witnessed a top
soccer fare during this game as both teams displayed good soccer. This
resulted in a scoreless first-half.
The second forty five minutes was crucial for both teams and they
came back with determination to win at any cost. They fought a grim
battle for almost fifteen minutes.
Uva team made the first break through to take the lead 1-0. From
there onwards they went on the attack and were successful in finding the
net once again to have a firm grip of the game. Uva defenders performed
a good defence line to hold the North Western Province attackers until
the final whistle and also to go away with the gold medal.
S. M. Rafik of Uva Province was declared as the Best Soccerite of the
33rd National Sports Festival.
Central Province won the bronze medal when they trounced Southern
Province three goals to one in the play off for the third place which
was played earlier at Cooray Park.
