Elephant - human conflict takes its toll

About 160 elephants and 50 persons die from the elephant-human
conflict, Environment Minister Patali Champaka Ranawaka said.
With the Environmental Development Ministry embarking on a full-scale
environmental development plan islandwide, the Minister has declared a
“Green month” from today.
International White Cane Day
The Sri Lanka Federation of the Visually Handicapped (SLFVH) will be
marking International White Cane Day for the 34th consecutive time this
year.
An awareness meeting will be held at the Public Library at 4.00 p.m.
on Friday, October 19 and this will be preceded by a ‘White Cane Walk’
commencing from opposite the Open Air Theatre at Viharamaha Devi Park,
Colombo 7, at 2.00 p.m.
White canes and umbrellas will be distributed to all participants.
Financial assistance would also be provided to selected members to start
self-employment projects. |
