Duty of Police Dept to protect junior officers -IGP

THE junior officers are the wealth of the Police Force. When any incident occurs the junior officers visit the scene first. The Police Department’s prime duty is to protect them, said Inspector General of Police Victor Perera at a ceremony to mark his first year in office at the Junior Officers’ Mess at Chaitya Road, Colombo recently.

To mark the event, the Junior Officers distributed scholarship packages to 20 children who had lost their fathers in the war.

“We have made arrangements to develop the welfare of the junior police officers, specially about their health conditions. Some officers are suffering from serious illnesses. Policemen who have medical problems will be treated by special personnel,” the IGP added.

The Police Department is run by the taxes paid by the public. Therefore, every policeman is duty bound to assist the public to maintain law and order, the IGP said.

The Police Department had also set up a programme to send junior officers abroad for further training.

They should learn all three languages - Sinhala, Tamil and English to meet the public demand. Law abiding people should be produced to build a peaceful nation, the IGP added.

Senior DIG Bodhi Liyanage addressing the 20 children, who received scholarships, said it was a historic event to distribute scholarship packages to children who were affected due to war, to mark the IGP’s first year in office.

The Government has allocated a large amount of funds for the up keep of the Department. We have built several holiday rest rooms in Kataragama, Kandy and Hantane for the benefit of the Junior Officers. The one in Nuwara Eliya is nearing completion, the Senior DIG added.

The scholarships were distributed by the IGP, Senior DIGs Bodhi Liyanage, Jayantha Wickremaratne, Sirisena Herath, Mahinda Balasuriya and N. K. Ilangakoon.

Constable A. M. N. B. Abeysinghe and Sergeant Thusithas Kumara conducted the proceedings.

Junior Officers’ Union President Sarath Deniyage and its Treasurer Nissanka Bandara also spoke.

Secretary Sarath Dehiwatta delivered the vote of thanks.
