Urban poor to get 1,000 houses

COLOMBO: Plans are afoot to construct 1,000 housing units before the
end of this year for the urban poor in Colombo district under the
Dilindu Niwasa Arunodaya programme, Urban Development and Sacred Area
Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardane said.
The housing project will be implemented by Jana Sabhas with the
participation and inspection of Local Government Authorities and
Community Centres.
Donations of local and international philanthropists and the taxes
imposed on the housing units which are exceeding 5,000 square feet will
be used for the construction of the proposed housing units.
The proposed housing units will be constructed through 153 Jana
Sabhas. Each Jana Sabha will be allocated Rs. 250,000 to construct two
housing units.
