FELICITATION: A new feature added to the Sinhalese culture in the
20th century is the compiling and publication of felicitation books. It
cannot be stated that the history of this has passed even 100 years. It
is correct to say that the felicitation books were created to state
briefly the biographics and performances of pandits.
At present, the books which can be categorised in this category are
being produced in various features. It is not unsuitable if one presumes
that giving such various features is done with a view to give
variegation and value.
By reviewing the last two decades it can be understood that
preference had been showed to compile felicitation books beautifying
with various characteristics such as Abhinandana, Abhitawa, Sambhavana,
Pranama, Upahara, Urasara, Uvahara, Harasaraniya, Abhinandika, Suviditha,
Patisamhida, Sulavath Pahansara, Pratisanvedaya, Samprasadhanaya,
Prabhashanaya, Sambhasha, Aarchanaa, Seva Sandipani, etc.
That happens according to the taste, likeness and criticism of the
editors. No limitations or definitions or methodology influencing it
have been arisen.
It is clearly seen that these types of books mostly not written by a
single person, but with the collective effort of several editors.
Similarly brief biography notes, data, documents, classical, articles,
verses etc. of the individual who was the subject matter of description
are also included in these books. Sometimes, the essays of experimental
and creative nature supplied to these books are collected and published
as separate books.
Mostly the books published in this way which include superior essays
becomes as books which improve the likeness of the reader.
It is worth to state that the book of felicitation to Wimal
Abhayasundara titled "Aseniya Kusum" has taken a different way rather
than lineage of above said books. As the main reason for that, the
editors must have decided by this felicitation, the various featured
books, personality and the behaviour pattern of the writer, who is the
subject matter of this Pandit.
Wimal Abhayasundera entered the reader's world in his early childhood
stage of life with his poems and gradually with his maturity may have
been a person completed with rare narrating skills who showed his
creative skills in various facts. Be that by prose, verse or drama, the
fictions are tasteful; meaningful and attractive. Hence his essays give
a fresh feeling even with the passing of time.
