MUSIC: The music Society of Sri Lanka which was established in 1967
by Kalasuri Gowreeswari Rajappan with the blessings of Arul Mozhi Arasu
Thirumuruga Kirupananda Variar, a Tamil scholar and religious dignitary
has completed its four decades in the spheres of music and dance.
HONOUR: Former Hindu Religious and Tamil Affairs Minister
Chellaih Rajadurai presents a Veena to Kalasuri Gowreeswari
Rajappan at Sri Siva Subramanya Swamy temple, Ginthupitiya. |
The former Supreme Court judge the late Justice Sriskandarajah was
the first president of music Society of Sri Lanka. He rendered yeoman
service for the betterment of the society and today it stands not merely
as an institution, but also as a resilient tradition and an indomitable
spirit destined to remain strong and sound for many more years to come.
Kalasuri Gowreeswari Rajappan has taught music for more than 40 years
of her life. She started giving tuition around 1967 and what drew
students by thousands to her was not only her reputation as a good
teacher, but also her standing as a musician whose rendering of carnatic
music was a model of excellence.
In fact, she is unique in that and she is a distinguished performer
and a distinguished teacher, both. Her students love her democratic and
broad outlook, her wide interest.
Besides, she expects strict discipline from her students when it
comes to giving and receiving lessons. She will not let a student go
home until he has imbibed the lesson for the day. Mrs. Gowreeswari
always feel and see sprouting and flourishing splendid new talent in a
host of young girls. They are even eager to learn and also to learn
well.
The students are quick to grasp technical nuances. Ragam, tanam,
pallavi are rendered excellently by them.
Gowreeswari Rajappan is also a radio and TV artist. In recognition of
her services in the field of music, she was honoured with the award of
Kalasuri title. Even the former Minister of Hindu Religious Affairs
Chelliah Rajadurai presented a memento after conferring Madhuragani Vani
title on her.
She has also been conferred with several titles like Issai Kujil,
Inissai Vani, Palissai Pavai, Pasurapamani, Veenai Vithakai and Eelathin
