Isipatana take Cup Championship

RUGBY: Isipatana College took the Cup Championship while
Dharmaraja College and Vidyartha College won the plate and bowl titles
respectively at the Singer SriLankan Airlines Schools Rugby Sevens
concluded at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium in Kandy yesterday.
In the Schools Cup Final Isipatana College squeezed through to a 7
points to nil win over Kingswood College. The Kingswoodians dominated
play for a major part of the game and they came close to scoring twice
but poor finish last them the chance of opening their account.
After a scoreless first half play drifted into the final minute. A
scrum inside Kingswood ‘22’ was won by Isipatana College and fly half
Niroshan Chathuranga sent a long pass to winger Kasun Gamage who dived
over for left. Reza Mubarak added the extra points.
In the cup semi finals Kingswood College scored a comfortable 19
points (2 goals, 1 try) to 5 (1 try) win over St. Anthony’s College.
In the second semi final Isipatana College surprised St. Peter’s
College with a 14 points (2 goals) to nil win.
Plate Championship
Dharmaraja College become Plate Champions by defeating S. Thomas’
College by 31 points (3 goals, 2 tries to 12 (1 goal, 1 try). At half
time Rajans led 12-7.
Rajans scored their tries through Dharshana Ethipola (2), Akila
Hettiarachchi (1), Kasun Gunasekera (1) and Harendra Withanage (1).
Akila Hettiarachchi goalled 2 tries while the other try was converted by
Dharshana Ethipola.
For the Thomians Johans Fernando and Rohitha Rajapakse scored a try
each and one of them was goalled by Manjith Thammannagama.
In the plate semi finals Dharmaraja College beat St. Joseph’s College
37-0 and S. Thomas’ College beat Ananda College 24-14.
Bowl Championship
Vidyartha College beat Wesley College by 29 points (2 goals, 3 tries)
to 12 (1 goal, 1 try). Wesley led 12-10 at half time.
For Vidyartha College S. Hapugaskumbura (2), R. Senanayake (1),
Amitha Perera (1), Vajira Harshana (1) scored tries and Amitha Perera
added the extra points to two of the tries.
