Cultural reawakening in East

COLOMBO: With “Negenahira Navodaya” gathering momentum, the
Cultural Ministry has embarked on a programme to resurrect the cultural
sector in the East.
Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene who made an inspection tour of the
area recently said that after two decades of LTTE tyranny, the East was
slowly reawakening through the development programme “Negenahira
Navodaya”.

Outlining his Ministry’s role the Minister pointed out that
development was not only confined to physical structures but should have
programmes to inculcate spiritual and moral values.
Therefore, a cultural revival should be used to facilitate this
aspect, the Minister said.
Accordingly, the Ministry has planned to open cultural centres in all
the GS divisions in the area. These centres are empowered to co-ordinate
all cultural activities in the given area.
The Ministry also has identified 308 destroyed religious sites for
renovation. These sites are to be renovated, the Minister said. In
addition the Ministry has planned to distribute needy materials to all
religious places in the area.
The Minister on his tour donated materials to several temples.
In addition, several programmes have been mooted to uplift the
cultural segment, the Minister said adding that his Ministry would give
their fullest support to make “Negenehira Navodaya” a success. |
