Woman cuts open womb, baby dies

HOMAGAMA: A 26-year-old woman from Homagama has taken out her six-months old baby after cutting open the womb with a knife, Police said.

Police recovered the baby’s body wrapped in black polythene under her bed.

The woman, a mother of two, had administered a crude anaesthetic before undertaking the ‘operation’, police said.

She had claimed that she operated on herself as she could not bear the pain which she initially said was a cyst in the stomach. On suspicion, Police searched her house and found the baby’s body.

Doctors who examined her at the Kalubowila hospital confirmed to Police that it was a pregnancy. It has also been revealed that she had separated from her husband.

Homagama Police are investigating.
