Stern action against railway saboteurs

COLOMBO: Transport Minister Dallas Alahapperuma has instructed the Railway Department Authorities to take stern action against saboteurs who engaged in Monday strike.

The Minister said the strikers damage the properties of the Railway Department including Hunupitiya colour signal system.

Despite the Ministry’s confirmation for reasonable trade union action, the one day token strike by a few trade unions of the Railway Department had exhibited their barbarian characteristics against the public property and passengers, Alahapperuma said.

The workers’ working rights were deprived by strikers as they assaulted them and damaged the Department properties, sources said. Some employees who attempted to report to service were attacked by buckets of human faeces, sources added.

Alahapperuma offered his gratitude to all workers who discharged their duties despite harassments by the strikers.
