Thai Buddhist delegation calls on President
COLOMBO: The Thai Buddhist delegation is on a tour to Buddhist
countries as a part of the 80th birthday celebrations of the King of
Thailand.
The group led by Ven. Phara Thpsophen, the Rector of
Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University now in Sri Lanka called on
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday at President's House in Kandy.
Prior to meeting with the President, they participated at the opening of
the Sri Mahindaramaya Sangaraja Memorial Buddhist Temple at
Kiribathkumbura, Peradeniya. The delegation meeting with the President
focused their attention to the Thai Buddhist Temple, being constructed
on 70-acres of land at Piliyandala.
The President invited them to erect a replica of the Thai-Buddha-Prathima
on the same land that the Temple will be constructed. The President and
the delegation discussed about activities connected to tourism in
Buddhist countries and underlined the need to improve tourism facilities
among the countries of the Buddhist world to strengthen
inter-relationship.
The Thai Buddhist delegation comprised 90 persons including 46 Nayaka
Theras. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Central Province Governor Tikiri
Kobbekaduwa, Ministers Dinesh Gunawardene and C.B. Ratnayake were also
present.
