Badulla Lions conduct seminar for A/L students

Lions Club of Badulla organised a Sinhala Language seminar for Advanced Level students sitting the examination in August this year. The seminar was conducted by Senior Lecturer in Sinhala Language, University of Peradeniya, Attanayake M. Herath. Over 1,000 students attended the seminar.

The project was organised and sponsored by the Lions Club of Badulla, and held at the Uva Provincial Council Library Auditorium, Badulla.

Participants paid a tribute to the Lions Club of Badulla for organising the seminar which provided them helpful guidelines for the GCE A/L Examination. Refreshments were served to the participants at the tea break.


Landmark service project by Kandy Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Kandy (District 3200 - Sri Lanka) initiated one of its most successful and land mark projects in care for the disabled by acting as the catalyst to substantially upgrade the “Colombo Friend in need” Society - Kandy Branch now called “The Centre for Handicapped”.

It was the initial funding and support provided by the Rotary Movement including human resources which enabled this organization to obtain support from a diverse number of other donors including NORAD, USAID, the Government of Sri Lanka, The Sri Lankan President’s Fund, Motivation of U.K. and a number of individual and Corporate donors to establish one of the most successful rehabilitation centres for physically handicapped persons in the country.

This centre now operates independently and is registered and approved by the Government of Sri Lanka. Todate, over 5,000 poor underprivileged persons have received a new lease of life by being provided with an artificial limb which enable them to walk once again.

The Rotarians involved in this worthy humanitarian programme, were Primary Contact & Project Initiator - Rtn. Vice President Shamil Peiris, the Late Rtn. Past President T. R. R. Rajan, Rtn. B.D.R. Rajan and Rtn. Dr V. Vijayakumaran.


“Diriyata Saviya” Scholarship Programme of Rotary Club of Kelaniya

“Diriyata Saviya” scholarship programme initiated by Rotary Club of Kelaniya was launched recently at Viharamaha Devi Balika Auditorium Kiribathgoda.

“Diriyata Saviya” aims at providing financial and other assistance to needy children mainly covering the Kelaniya area who are unable to meet expenses connected with furthering their education due to financial strains.

Rotarian Amitha Mallawarachchi Project Director of “Diriyata Saviya” confirms selecting 20 students both girls and boys based on their examination results in G.C.E. Ordinary Level 2006 and eligible to follow G.C.E. Advanced Level class, for the scholarship programme.
