Van with 206 gelignite sticks seized

Kalpitiya: A van transporting 206 gelignite sticks was apprehended by Kalpitiya police in the wee hours of yesterday.

According to Kalpitiya police acting on information they placed a sudden road block along the Puttalam - Mannar road and halted a Hi-Ace Dolphin van bearing no:56-6584 yesterday around 2.00 a.m.

The van contained 206 gelignite slabs. Police found the gelignite slabs carefully stored in the air conditioner of the van, police added. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was transporting the high explosive slabs to a destination in Mannar.

The driver and the van were taken into custody.

Kalpitiya police are conducting the investigations.
