Rs. 160m to develop Vavuniya road network

COLOMBO: The Government has planned to develop the road network in
Vavuniya with the objective of improving infrastructure facilities in
cleared areas.
Highways and Road Development Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle told the
Daily News that the Ministry has already allocated Rs. 160 million to
develop the Periya-Ulukkulama road in Vavuniya. The distance of the
proposed road is 7.8 km.
“We have also decided to rehabilitate the sacred places in the
District,” the Minister said. The Sri Sumanaramaya in Periya, Ulukkulama
will be rehabilitated by spending Rs. 2.8 million.
The Minister said that he has visited the area on four occasions and
has provided maximum relief to the people. The Minister and the Chief
Incumbent of the Periya Ulukkulama Sri Sumanaramaya, Ven. Sumanathissa
Threa discussed the difficulties of the villagers. The importance of
developing the road was stressed at this meeting.
He said President Mahinda Rajapaksa has advised him to take immediate
measures to fulfil the basic requirements of the people. “We take all
possible steps to strengthen security in the area while promoting
infrastructure facilities for the betterment of the villagers. “We have
already provided doctors, medicine and hostels to the Hospital in Periya
Ulukkulama, the Minister said.
The Government has not hesitated to develop electricity, water
supply, roads and irrigation system in the North and East while facing
the war.
“We are implementing “Nagenahira Navodaya” expecting the speedy
development in the Eastern Province.
