Growth in footwear exports this year

FOOTWEAR: The local footwear market is close to saturation point.

Supply and demand are becoming equal and the industry now needs to focus more on exports for the growth of the industry, Assistant Director of the Export Development Board (EDB) Sriyani de Saram said.

The EDB is targeting a 11 percent growth in footwear exports during this year. In 2005 this sector had not shown significant growth compared to 2004. But in 2006 this sector has earned US$ 20 million through exports. In 2005 it was US$ 13 million.

Due to the high taxes imposed on imported shoes and duty free concessions on imported shoe accessories and raw materials there is a huge growth in the local footwear market. Now local footwear companies need to concentrate more on exports, she said.

‘We have understood that many EU buyers are now focusing on countries like Sri Lanka, Vietnam and India than China.,she said.

Sri Lanka also has the competitive advantage with the GSP concessions. Many Indian companies are also focusing on Sri Lanka as a subcontracting destination for their footwear industry, de Saram said.

‘In the international market the demand for canvas shoes is rising and Sri Lanka could make use of this opportunity, she said.

Meanwhile, the EDB together with the Ministry of Industrial Development and the Sri Lanka Footwear Association expects to organise a footwear, leather goods, travel goods ,raw material, Machinery & components exhibition on November 24 to 26 at the BMICH.

The main objectives of organising this event are to give recognition to the local footwear industry, link small manufacturers with large-scale manufactures and identify the most creative and skilled SMEs to be developed as potential exporters.

It also expects to create an awareness on the opportunities for Sri Lankan manufacturers to export to the EU under the GSP+ Scheme, she said.

‘This will be an ideal meeting point for manufacturers, buyers and raw material suppliers in the industry.

We have made arrangements to bring foreign delegations from France, UK and Germany, she said.

The EDB is also planning to bring service providers such as design schools and arrangements have been made to bring international journalists from reputed magazines.
